Inflatable: Giant Air-filled Artworks Come to the Exploratorium.
What’s that?! A huge humanoid inflatable art installation is popping up .
We humans, as a species, tend to have a fascination with all things big.

The allure of larger-than-life objects is a phenomenon that is particularly prevalent here in Australia – whether it’s a prawn or a pineapple, we can’t get enough of the everyday when it’s been inflated, enlarged and placed in a picturesque location for us to gaze upon in pure ecstasy. It also doesn’t hurt that these objects make for an absolute ripper of a photo opp.

Aptly titled What’s That?, the five-metre-tall figure that will be taking up residence – one designed to get humans to take a step back and feel a moment of humility. This crouching figure is one of a brood of giant inflatable luminous white ‘humanoids’ who land at different sites across the globe. A dystopian tale featuring gargantuan humanoids that have overrun a human race gone feral – quite the pertinent theme for the current social climate. The main thing that we wants observers to take away from the installation – apart from wonder and awe at the sheer size of it – is the experience of a flipped script where people are the most vulnerable species on Earth.

Inflatable is a group installation that asks five artists to create ephemeral sculptures filled with air. The fun and interactive exhibition is spread throughout the Exploratorium's indoor and outdoor galleries, inviting the public to engage with the artwork throughout the summer.

By merging art, science, and technology, inflatable art was the perfect fit for the Exploratorium's exhibition. it also provided a flexible way to produce an eye-catching show.

Large white figures crouch and peer around corners, bringing a ghostly human feel to the environment.

Inflatable is an experience, not just a presentation of static work. Almost everything can be touched, walked around, explored, or in some cases activated by the viewer, The photos help tell part of the story, but you really have to move around each piece to truly appreciate its message and scale. If visitors leave with a sense of wonderment or even just a smile, I think the show did its job.
